Despite the variety and availability of movies and TV series, for example on streaming platforms and smart TVs, one of the most common questions people ask on the web is still: what to watch? The recommendations of Liepāja residents may help to find the answer.

– Every now and then I watch something interesting on TV, for example the detective series “Midsomer murders”.
In order to visit the cinema with your wife, the film shown must be very tempting. It seems that the last movie we watched in the cinema was the Latvian comedy “Vecaku sapulce”.
We mostly watch movies on TV, but if it happens that we don’t agree, then I find something to watch on the computer.
I love a good comedy.
The old movies that we used to like a lot in the 70s and 80s, like “Phantom”, now seem rather naive. However, I would like to watch one or another old comedy, including Latvian film classics, such as “A Short Guide to Loving”.
Liepāja residents would be advised to watch those films that were partly or largely shot in Liepaja.
In films from 30, 40 and 50 years ago, you can see the streets, houses and squares of our city as they were and compare how they have become now.
The content of the films is not the main thing in this case. It is interesting to look and quickly answer the question: where is it?
Such films are “The city under the linden trees”, “Debt in love”, “OR inspector”, “Become my mother-in-law”, etc.
Evelina Benuševica, “Youth House” project manager:
– I am quite a big movie lover, I mostly choose foreign films and TV series. The adventure genre is the closest to me, it really “pulls you in” and makes you sympathize with the characters of the film.
I can definitely mention “Vampire diaries” as my “autumn evening” series. I’m re-watching it for about the fourth time this year.
“The Vampire Diaries” would appeal to those who like both the theme of love and something supernatural, scary.
Start watching, don’t tear yourself away from the screen for long. The plot is very intriguing.
As a second choice, I can recommend The 100. This series is about how the descendants of the post-apocalypse survivors live when life is no longer possible on Earth. And then, many years later, 100 young people are taken back to Earth to test the conditions, whether it is habitable again. Will appeal to those who are interested in adventure.
I also definitely recommend watching “Hunger Games” and “Others”.
Kristaps Ruicēns, representative of “PILAT Real Estate”:
– Now I’m at such a stage that I don’t really have time to watch movies. If there is anything on TV, it’s only sports once or twice a week.
My TV and movie genre is currently subordinated to children. They then also choose a repertoire they like accordingly.
However, at this time – especially in November – it is good to watch one of our own patriotic films, where we can realize the values of our country –
“Guardians of Riga”, “Blizzard of Souls”.
“Guardians of Riga” is a historical film about the events of November 1919 during the Latvian Freedom Struggle.
“Storm of Souls” takes place during the First World War and the Latvian Freedom Struggle and tells the story of Latvian archers.
Tom Malkevičs, Deputy Director of “Liepāja Public Transport”:
– I haven’t watched anything so memorable for a long time. The last TV series I watched is the political thriller The Diplomat.
I liked it in the first episode, so I continued to watch this series. It seems I haven’t seen the third season.
The series has an interesting plot about international relations and diplomacy and how to solve crises. There are unexpected twists and a bit of humor.
A seasoned US diplomat is unexpectedly appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom at the height of an international crisis.
The series has received high reviews from critics, both for the script and the acting.
Sindija Kļava-Zoša, SIA “Schock Metal Latvia” quality manager:
– I watch movies most often and most willingly at home with my husband and four-legged friends.
We prefer online streaming platforms. I rarely go to the cinema, but at home I am my own boss and it is easier to organize a tea break without losing part of the story.
When you don’t want anything complicated, but still want a pleasant, entertaining evening, I can recommend watching the sequel to the classic alien story “Alien” or, more precisely, the series “Alien: Earth” created by Noah Hawley.
It tells about the time shortly before the original 1979 film “The Stranger”, which has now become a true classic of science fiction.
As it happens with the brave who dare to offer a new perspective on long-known pieces,
this series, along with many praises, also received a lot of criticism.
And yet, I think it’s a pretty good watch about corporate dystopia, the lust for eternal life, and of course the franchise’s usual alien muses. The visual performance and soundtrack must also be praised.
And then you can pull in a few more evenings and refresh your memory of other films of the “Alien” story – in total seven more full-length films are added to the franchise.
Gatis Maliks, Liepaja theater actor:
– The evenings come quickly, the streets are dark in November, there is little light and warmth, you must consciously remind yourself that even if spring comes, it will only be after very long and long months.
That’s why I recommend the most current domestic film “The Dark Blue Gospel” by Oskar Ruppenheit to every Liepaja resident.
After this movie, there will be no more light and warmth, no longer and sunnier days, and the calendar will not miraculously change from November to April.
However, it is a quality and appealing cinema.
Dark Blue Gospel is an uncomfortable, beautifully shot, bitterly honest film that leaves a good aftertaste.
So that everything is not completely gloomy and black, the filmmakers also tease the viewer with some KEF’isms (KEF – crime comedy “Criminal Excellence Foundation, ed.)but it is and remains a dark film about the nineties, bandits, ments and Riga.
