Cholera Outbreak in Kabalo Health Zone, Tanganyika Province, DRC – November 2025
As of November 6, 2025, a cholera outbreak is ongoing in the Kabalo health zone, tanganyika Province, democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).According to reports, more than 30 suspected cases, including one confirmed death, were recorded during the 44th epidemiological week of 2025. The outbreak is raising concerns due to continued consumption of untreated water from the Congo River and the Lukuga River.
The provincial health division is leading patient care efforts, supported by organizations like the Red Cross. the Red Cross has established water chlorination sites, but these are currently insufficient to meet the needs of all at-risk communities. Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, and is directly linked to poor sanitation and hygiene practices, especially the consumption of water contaminated with fecal matter WHO – Cholera.
Kabalo’s location, surrounded by the Lukuga River and the Congo River, presents a significant challenge, as numerous health areas are situated nearby. Currently, there are five chlorination sites operating in central Kabalo and an additional two to three sites along the Lukuga River. Health officials emphasize the need to strengthen these efforts to control the spread of the disease.
Community health workers are actively conducting awareness campaigns in schools and markets, promoting improved hygiene practices, including handwashing, and safe water consumption to limit further transmission.
