burlington Opens Emergency Shelter as Arctic Blast Approaches
Burlington,Vermont,is preparing for dangerously cold temperatures this week and has opened an emergency shelter to provide warmth and safety for those in need. The shelter’s opening comes as a meaningful Arctic air mass descends upon the region, threatening record lows and posing a risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
city officials announced the activation of the emergency shelter on December 25, 2025, citing forecasts predicting sustained temperatures well below freezing, with wind chills potentially dropping into the negative double digits. The shelter will operate 24/7, offering not only a warm place to sleep but also hot meals, blankets, and access to support services.
“The safety of our community is our top priority,” stated Mayor Emma Clarkson in a press release. “We understand the extreme cold poses a serious threat, especially to our vulnerable populations. This shelter is a critical resource to ensure everyone has a safe place to escape the elements.”

- Capacity: The shelter can accommodate up to 75 individuals.
- Services: In addition to overnight lodging, the shelter provides meals, hygiene facilities, and connections to social services agencies.
