Citizen Eco-Drive Photon: A Physics Lesson on Your Wrist
Citizen is celebrating 50 years of solar-powered timekeeping with the debut of the Eco-Drive Photon, a new timepiece inspired by the double-slit experiment in physics. This launch marks a significant milestone for the brand, building on its evolution of solar technology since 1976 and the introduction of the Eco-Drive in 1995.
From Crystron to Eco-Drive: A History of Solar Power
Citizen first ventured into light-powered watches with the 1976 Crystron Solar Cell, the world’s first commercially available analog quartz watch powered by solar cells [1]. The original Crystron featured large solar panels. The Eco-Drive, launched in 1995 with the Caliber 7878, refined this technology with thinner cells capable of absorbing indoor light, a feature that set it apart from its predecessor [2].
The Science Behind the Dial
The Eco-Drive Photon’s dial draws inspiration from Thomas Young’s 1801 double-slit experiment, which demonstrated the wave-like nature of light. The watch features two metal plates with ripple-like slits layered on top of each other, creating a three-dimensional structure. Light passing through these slits interacts with a structural color film below, producing shifting hues without the use of pigments. This effect mimics the iridescent colors seen in bird feathers, where microscopic surface structures reflect light at different angles [1].
The silver model exhibits blue tones, whereas the black-and-gold version displays a purple-gold depth. Citizen describes this dial as one of its most technically ambitious designs for a general release.
Super Titanium Case and Design Details
The 39mm cushion case is constructed from Citizen’s Super Titanium with Duratect surface hardening, making it five times harder and nearly half the weight of stainless steel. The case features a rounded octagonal bezel and an integrated tapered bracelet with brushed H-links. The bracelet incorporates micro-adjustments in the clasp for a comfortable fit. A dual spherical sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial.
Power and Specifications
The Eco-Drive Photon is powered by the Citizen Caliber E036 Eco-Drive movement, offering a power reserve of 365 days on a full charge – a significant improvement over the original Eco-Drive’s six-month reserve [2]. The movement maintains an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. Each watch features a numbered caseback engraved with the 50th-anniversary logo and is packaged in a special box with the slit motif.
