Rome is increasingly becoming a cinematic hotspot. The Latin expression “Rome is the capital of the world” historically described the power of the Roman Empire’s capitals, but in recent years, we could also say “Rome, capital of cinema.” In just one year, Rome hosted 100 film sets – including films, TV series, commercials, documentaries, short films, and video clips – solidifying its position as Italy’s New York when it comes to filmmaking.

This trend translates into positive economic effects for related industries and boosts tourism.

Rome is still the most loved by cinema

From iconic landmarks to hidden, authentic corners outside the typical tourist routes, rome reigns supreme as Italy’s cinematic queen, attracting directors from around the globe.

Between January and November of 2023, the Eternal City served as the backdrop for 100 film sets, primarily in the city centre – 38 productions in the first Town Hall and 17 in the second municipality. According to a report by francesco Lattarulo on behalf of CNA Rome, in collaboration with Nina, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Rome Lazio Film Commission, the Capital accounted for over 63% of the value of national film production.

Some notable productions filmed this year include “40 seconds” by vincenzo Alfieri, inspired by the true story of Willy monteiro duarte, and a winner of the special Jury prize for best acting cast at the 20th Rome Film Festival.

Under the Rain,” another November/December 2023 production set in Rome, is the new film by fabrizio Maria Cortese, telling an impractical love story against the backdrop of the nocturnal eternal City. Ficarra and Picone also filmed scenes for their “Sicilia Express” here.

Numerous foreign sets were also present, such as the French director Bertrand Mandico’s “Elastic Rome” starring Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard. Other productions include Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars,” set in EUR, the TV series “The Saints” by Martin Scorsese, and “The Iris Affair” with Tom Hollander. Many more sets are anticipated in Rome and throughout the Lazio region in the near future. “We aim to maintain the same trend as this year: Rome continues to be an ultra-attractive setting and we have already received many requests from abroad, but not only from America,” explained Lorenzo Lei, CEO of the Lazio Film Commission Foundation.
