Camogie League Clash Marred by Venue Change and Facility Concerns
Clare’s 0-15 to 0-09 victory over Wexford in the Centra Camogie League Division 1B on Saturday was overshadowed by a late venue change and subsequent complaints regarding inadequate facilities. The issues have sparked criticism from Wexford players and raised questions about the standard of preparation for elite female athletes.
Last-Minute Venue Switch
The match was originally scheduled to be played at Clareabbey, but was moved to Parteen-Meelick just two hours before the scheduled throw-in due to an unplayable pitch at the initial location. A spokesperson for Clare Camogie confirmed the Clareabbey surface was deemed unsuitable for play, prompting the relocation. A “memorial match between two local clubs” had taken place at Parteen-Meelick prior to the Division 1B tie, delaying the start time by 30 minutes to 2:30 PM.
Pitch Conditions Questioned
Despite being deemed playable by match officials, the condition of the pitch at Parteen-Meelick came under scrutiny. Images and video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Wexford journalist Dean Goodison showed heavy underfoot conditions, particularly around one of the goalmouths. Observe images here.
Player Frustration
Wexford player Laura Dempsey voiced her dissatisfaction on social media, highlighting the inconvenience caused by the late venue change and the lack of basic amenities. Dempsey pointed out the four-hour journey undertaken by the team, the short notice of the venue change, and the absence of a dressing room and hot showers. Read more on Balls.ie.
Camogie Association Response
Wexford Camogie have been contacted for comment regarding the situation. The Camogie Association protocols were followed, with match officials inspecting the modern venue before allowing the game to proceed. RTÉ Sport reports that the surface was deemed playable following the inspection.
Concerns Over Treatment of Elite Athletes
The incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of female athletes in Gaelic games. Commentators have noted that the lack of adequate facilities and the disruption caused by the venue change are unacceptable for elite competition. Wexford Weekly details the concerns, with many agreeing that the situation demonstrates a “total lack of respect to both teams.”
Despite the off-field issues, Clare secured a 0-15 to 0-09 victory, with Lorna McNamara’s free-taking proving crucial. Abby Walsh and Claire Hehir were dominant in the Clare half-back line, while Linda Bolger and Chloe Cash contributed 0-6 of Wexford’s total score.
