Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT both now connect to bank accounts for spending analysis, but they split on privacy defaults: Claude’s Personal Finance excludes those chats from model training automatically, while ChatGPT’s Finances feature follows user training settings that default to on, Engadget reported.
Both assistants use Plaid to link accounts at institutions including Bank of America, Capital One and Chase, granting read-only access that cannot initiate payments. OpenAI’s Finances launched May 15, 2026 for Pro subscribers and reached Free users October 2, 2026, BankBridge reported, while Anthropic’s Personal Finance entered beta November 5, 2026 for paid plans in the US.
How do Claude and ChatGPT connect to your bank accounts?
Both require linking through Plaid. ChatGPT’s built-in Finances works only inside ChatGPT, while Claude offers Personal Finance inside its apps plus custom connectors via the Model Context Protocol that also reach Claude Code, BankBridge reported. A connector such as BankBridge costs $5 per month per connected bank and works in both assistants. The Model Context Protocol route also reaches Cowork, and in Claude Code BankBridge installs a plugin adding 19 slash commands such as /subscriptions and /budget-draft. Without account access, asking either assistant how much you spent on restaurants last month returns only a request to paste your numbers or upload a statement.
What financial data can each assistant see?
Claude’s Personal Finance views bank name, account name, type, last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transactions, Anthropic specified. OpenAI said ChatGPT Finances can see balances, transactions, investments and liabilities. TechRepublic noted Claude can analyze transaction histories, identify recurring payments and flag potentially unusual charges. Both generate dashboards for monthly expenses, investments and spending habits, and answer general questions about goals like buying a house or creating a savings plan. Claude can answer specific queries such as how much you spent on groceries last month, though Anthropic notes it can still make mistakes and users should double-check.

How do the privacy and training settings differ?
Anthropic stated that by default, conversations with Claude in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its models. OpenAI stated that conversations involving linked financial accounts use the same model training settings as ChatGPT. Users must go to Data controls and disable “Improve the model for everyone,” which is enabled by default.
Deleting data after account disconnection
Anthropic said Claude will no longer see any data previously provided to its Personal Finance feature if you unlink your bank account. OpenAI stated that synced account data will be deleted from its systems within 30 days of disconnecting.
Do these features show ads or offer financial products?
Anthropic said Personal Finance has no ads or sponsored recommendations and does not offer credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own. OpenAI has been testing ads for its cheaper tiers since January and is partnering with Intuit to add features like credit card applications and tax questions.
What else should you know about using AI for personal finance?
ChatGPT Finances rolled out to US users across Pro, Plus, Free and Go plans, while Claude Personal Finance is available to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the US across web, desktop, iOS and Android apps, TechRepublic reported.
Yes. BankBridge operates as a standard MCP server, so you can connect each bank once and add the same server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Codex; billing is per bank, not per assistant, BankBridge reported.
No. Both Anthropic and OpenAI specified read-only access, meaning the integrations cannot initiate payments or make changes to accounts.

For users wanting flexibility across multiple AI tools, BankBridge provides a connector at $5 per month per bank that works in both ChatGPT and Claude, including Claude Code for scripting and file exports. Anthropic said it wants to hear from banks, wealth managers and financial services companies to improve Personal Finance, while OpenAI plans to expand ChatGPT Finances through its Intuit partnership. Anthropic announced the feature ahead of plans to go public with a potentially record-breaking valuation, TechRepublic spotlighted it in September under the name Claude Money, and both companies say the tools are not designed to offer expert financial advice.
