A Nation Honors its Organ Donors

Over one thousand people gathered for a poignant service of remembrance and thanksgiving to honor organ donors and their families. The event, organized by the Irish Kidney Association, was held at the church of the Holy Child in Whitehall, north Dublin.

A Gathering of gratitude

The service brought together a diverse group of individuals deeply connected to the world of organ donation. Attendees included those whose lives have been touched by organ transplantation, dedicated volunteers, long-serving staff of the Irish Kidney Association, and multi-faith celebrants. Remembering colm Donnelly: A Gift of Life

Among those remembered was eighteen-year-old Colm Donnelly, who tragically passed away in February 2023 following an accident on his family farm in Gorey, Co Wexford. Colm’s selfless gift provided a second chance for four individuals.

Niamh Donnelly, Colm’s sister, held a framed photo of her brother during the service. She shared how Colm was a suitable donor for multiple organs, giving “four people the gift of life.” This act of generosity has brought solace to her family in their time of grief.

A Family’s understanding

Colm’s father,Walter Donnelly,explained that their family had previously benefitted from organ donation. This personal experience solidified their decision to honor Colm’s potential to help others after his death.

“Coming here today to see how young people benefit from organ donation is fantastic,” Walter said. He expressed the comfort knowing his son’s legacy continues through the lives he saved.

Walter added that Colm’s heart valves were able to be used, further extending his impact.
