Colonial downs Announces Expanded Racing Season for 2025
Colonial Downs racetrack in New Kent County is gearing up for its most extensive racing schedule since its 2019 revival, signaling a robust period for horse racing in virginia. The 2025 summer meet, commencing on Wednesday, July 9th, will span 44 days – a significant increase from the 27 days featured in recent years.
The Link Between Racing & Ancient horse Racing (HHR)
This expansion isn’t simply a matter of scheduling; it’s directly correlated to the flourishing popularity of Historical Horse Racing (HHR) gaming machines across the state. Virginia’s unique model ties the number of live racing days to the presence of these machines. Currently, for every 100 HHR machines operated by Rosie’s Gaming Emporium, one additional racing day is added to the Colonial Downs calendar. With over 4,400 HHR machines now operational throughout Virginia, the track is benefiting from a considerable boost in available racing dates.

A highlight of the 2025 season will be the inaugural Festival of Racing on August 9th.This event will showcase several prestigious races relocated from Arlington International Racecourse in Chicago, including the Arlington Million, the Beverly D stakes, and the Secretariat Stakes. These Grade 1 stakes races are expected to draw significant national and international attention, solidifying Colonial Downs’ position as a premier racing destination. The Arlington Million, such as, historically attracted fields of top-class turf horses and substantial wagering interest.
