Colorectal Cancer: Romania Launches National Awareness Campaign
Bucharest, March 24, 2026 – Bristol Myers Squibb Romania (BMS Romania) today launched the national information campaign “You would do anything,” aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of colorectal cancer screening for prevention and early diagnosis. The campaign seeks to encourage individuals over 45-50 years old to undergo regular testing, even in the absence of symptoms.
The Burden of Colorectal Cancer in Romania
Colorectal cancer, affecting the colon and rectum, is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Romania. Annually, over 8,000 men and nearly 5,500 women receive this diagnosis1. Sadly, the disease claims over 7,000 lives each year1. Nationally, it is the leading oncological disease1. More than 13,500 people are diagnosed annually, and over 7,000 succumb to the illness1.
The Impact of Screening
The high mortality rate is largely attributed to limited access to screening programs and late-stage diagnoses1. Screening for colorectal cancer is recommended for individuals aged 50 and older without risk factors, and from age 45 for those with increased risk1. Early detection, through testing even without symptoms, significantly improves treatment success rates, with chances of survival reaching up to 90%1. Six out of ten colorectal cancers can be prevented through screening, and nine out of ten early detected cases can be treated1.
“You Would Do Anything” Campaign
The “You would do anything” campaign challenges individuals to prioritize their health. As Cătălin Radu, General Manager of Bristol Myers Squibb Romania, states, “Timely screening GIVES YOU TIME, that’s what all of us over 45-50 years old demand to understand. Preventive medicine is of major importance to our health. We don’t have to wait for symptoms to go to the doctor, testing in their absence is the best decision.”1
