Conan O’Brien Reflects on Rob Reiner’s Death Following Argument at Holiday Party

Conan O’Brien has spoken publicly about the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, revealing his shock and grief after learning of their passing just days after hosting them at his holiday party. The couple was found dead on December 14, 2025, at their Brentwood, California home, and Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, was subsequently arrested in connection with their murders [1].

A Shocking Loss

O’Brien, in a recent interview with The New Yorker, described his close relationship with the Reiners, stating that he and his wife had grown increasingly fond of the couple in the months leading up to their deaths [3]. He expressed his disbelief and sorrow upon hearing the news.

“I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot,” O’Brien told David Remnick. “My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so — they were just such lovely people. And to have that experience of saying goodnight to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone… I think I was in shock for quite a even as afterward. It’s just so awful.”

Pre-Murder Argument at Holiday Party

Reports surfaced following the Reiners’ deaths that an argument occurred at O’Brien’s Christmas party the night before the tragedy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nick Reiner was reportedly disruptive at the party, confronting guest Bill Hader and later arguing with his father [2]. All three Reiners left the party that evening.

Reiner’s Legacy

O’Brien also highlighted Rob Reiner’s significant contributions to filmmaking, praising his string of classic movies, including This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally…. He noted the rarity of a director achieving such consistent success.

“It’s seven movies that Rob Reiner made, in quick succession, that are classics,” O’Brien said. “Now, if you can make one great movie, that’s impressive. To make two means that you’re one of the greats. To make seven — in, like, a nine-year, 10-year, 11-year period — is insanity. With Spinal Tap alone, if that’d been the only thing he ever did, he influenced my generation enormously.”

O’Brien to Host the Oscars

Despite the somber circumstances, O’Brien is preparing to host the 2026 Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, marking his second time as the event’s master of ceremonies.
