Former NRL Player Matt Utai Shot in Sydney Drive-By, Teenagers Charged
Sydney, Australia – Former National Rugby League (NRL) player Matt Utai, 44, was shot in the leg and shoulder during a drive-by shooting in Greenacre, a suburb of Sydney, on Tuesday, February 18, 2026. Police have since charged four teenagers in connection with the shooting and a series of related arson attacks.
Details of the Shooting and Arrests
Utai underwent surgery for his injuries and remains in serious condition. According to New South Wales Police, the shots were fired from a white SUV, which was later found burned out in Wiley Park.
A 16-year-ancient boy and a 19-year-old man have been charged with accessory after the fact to shoot with intent to murder. An 18-year-old and another 19-year-old have been charged with damaging property by fire, with the latter also facing charges for supplying prohibited drugs.
On Friday, February 20, 2026, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Marsden Park and a 15-year-old boy was arrested in Emerton. Police allege both were the gunmen responsible for the attack on Utai. Both have been charged with shooting with intent to murder and participating in a criminal group contributing to criminal activity. The 25-year-old also faces a charge of possessing a prohibited drug.
Alleged Links to Criminal Groups
Police believe the shooting is linked to a conflict between the Alameddine crime family and a group known as the ‘Coconut Cartel’. Investigators suspect the shooting was intended to target Utai’s son, Iziah Utai, a former associate of the Alameddine network who is believed to have ties to the Coconut Cartel.
Authorities have described the Coconut Cartel as a “crime for hire group” that has been publicly claiming responsibility for attacks on members of the Alameddine family online since December 2025.
Overseas Orchestration Concerns
Superintendent Brad Abdy of the Raptor Squad expressed concern that individuals operating from overseas are orchestrating the violence, tasking people in Sydney to commit crimes while remaining “tucked away free from reach.”
Matt Utai’s Rugby League Career
Matt Utai played 167 NRL games for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Wests Tigers. He represented both New Zealand and Samoa internationally and was a member of the Bulldogs team that won the 2004 NRL premiership. He retired from professional rugby league after playing for the Auburn Warriors in the Ron Massey Cup.
Police state that Matt Utai is not suspected of any wrongdoing in connection with the ongoing investigation.
