There are around 153,000 Connecticut military veterans, according to state officials.
HARTFORD, Conn. — A part of Gov. Ned Lamont‘s proposed state budget would allocate funds to grant U.S. veterans free passes and discounted service for school students on the state’s bus lines.
Lamont highlighted details of the proposal Tuesday, which would invest $3.5 million in issuing free bus passes for military veterans for public bus services around the state, including CTtransit, CTfastrak, and others. The funding will also provide a 50% discount on CTtransit buses for K-12 students.
“Our veterans have provided so much to every person in our country, and this is another way we can show how much we appreciate and value their service,” Lamont said. “Connecticut has a strong network of bus services statewide, and enabling our veterans to use them at no cost is something we should enact.”
“Providing discounted bus fares for students and veterans isn’t just about increasing affordability, it’s about access,” said Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “Reliable transportation ensures people can reach essential destinations like health care, jobs, and school. I appreciate Governor Lamont for introducing this proposal as transit services continue to play a critical role in our communities.”
There are around 153,000 Connecticut veterans. If the budget proposal is approved, the Connecticut Dept. of Veteran Affairs would be responsible for issuing the bus passes to veterans.
