Bodywhys’ Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023

As Bodywhys’ annual Eating Disorders Awareness Week campaign gains momentum, communities across Ireland are encouraged to participate through various initiatives, including lighting up buildings in purple and sharing messages of support. In 2023, Bodywhys provided support to over 5,200 individuals through its free and confidential services, including a helpline, email support, chat and video-based support groups. Bodywhys is the Eating Disorders Association of Ireland.

From Fitness Obsession to Anorexia

Conor Nolan’s journey began at age 11 with a growing focus on fitness. This dedication evolved into an unhealthy obsession, leading to the development of anorexia. He describes the experience as taking a “sinister toll” on his life, marked by an increasing preoccupation with every bite of food. The Irish Examiner reported on Nolan’s story in November 2025, highlighting his struggle and eventual recovery.

Sharing Experiences and Promoting Acceptance

Now, Conor travels across Ireland, delivering talks to students about his experiences with anorexia and depression. He emphasizes that accepting his eating disorder was a pivotal moment in his recovery. He also noted the increasing awareness surrounding eating disorders as a positive development.

Events During Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2023

The Cavan Courthouse was among the locations lit in purple to show support. A poster detailing the events was released by Bodywhys.

Conor Nolan’s Advocacy

Conor Nolan continues to use his voice to advocate for mental health and eating disorder awareness. His Instagram account showcases his advocacy function and interactions with others. In November 2025, he spoke about the importance of counselling in his recovery, stating that it was “100% life-changing.” He believes that recognizing the power to regain control over one’s health is a crucial step towards recovery.
