Cork City Retailers Battle Alcohol Theft as Gardaí Increase Visibility

Cork city centre businesses continue to grapple with significant losses due to alcohol theft, with some retailers reporting weekly losses of up to €1,000. However, a recent increase in Garda presence is showing early signs of curbing shoplifting incidents, according to business owners.

The Scale of the Problem

A recent study by Spanish security firm STC, encompassing 15 countries, revealed that alcohol is among the top five most stolen products in nearly all surveyed nations. Notably, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Belgium identified alcohol as the most stolen item.

Kevin Herlihy, co-owner of four Centra stores in Cork city centre – located on Patrick Street, Oliver Plunkett Street, Grand Parade, and North Main Street – and additional stores in Bishopstown and Mallow, highlighted the ongoing issue. “Alcohol theft remains a big issue. Every day stuff is taken – wine, beer, alcopops,” he stated. He noted that security costs for his four city centre stores now total €250,000 annually, with each store experiencing approximately €150 to €250 in stolen goods per week.

Meat is likewise a frequent target for thieves. Last week, Mr. Herlihy’s Bishopstown store experienced a loss of €560 due to the theft of meat and other items, including washing powder.

Mr. Herlihy, a former president of the Cork Business Association (CBA), acknowledged the challenges faced by larger retailers as well, stating, “I know the multiple retailers are putting up with untold grief.”

Increased Garda Presence Shows Promise

Despite the persistent problem, Mr. Herlihy reported a positive impact from the High Visibility Policing Plan launched by Gardaí in Cork city in late November. “The Garda presence on the street is commendable, and extremely much appreciated by businesses. It’s definitely a deterrent,” he said.

The CBA echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the increased Garda presence is making a significant difference. The CBA has also collaborated with Cork City Council to establish a city centre warden program, with four staff members working in conjunction with Gardaí.

The Gardaí launched the policing plan for the city in late November, with 23 additional gardaí assigned to the operation daily, comprising 11 during daytime hours and 12 at night.

European Trends in Retail Theft

The STC research indicated that most shoplifting in Europe is driven by resale, with thieves targeting high-value, branded, and gourmet products. Self-checkout tills were identified as particularly vulnerable areas, prompting retailers to invest in security measures like cases and bottle collars.

The study revealed varying theft patterns based on local consumer preferences. For example, Iberian ham and olive oil were most stolen in Spain, beer in Belgium and Finland, bakery and pastry products in Germany, chocolate and sweets in Britain, and coffee in France and the Netherlands. Meat also ranked among the top three stolen items in France and the Netherlands.
