A Midleton woman has transformed personal tragedy into a remarkable act of support, completing a 169km swim over 56 days to raise funds for Mallow Search and rescue (MSAR). Kate Colbert daly dedicated her challenge to the memory of her childhood friend, Cormac Ryan, who tragically died in 2020.

A Tribute Forged in Loss

Cormac Ryan, a beloved rugby player with Midleton RFC, was remembered as a vibrant and kind-hearted individual. His loss deeply affected the community, and the subsequent search effort was led by Mallow Search and Rescue. Kate recalled the selfless dedication of the MSAR volunteers during the difficult time, noting their commitment even at personal sacrifice. She specifically remembered a volunteer joking about missing a Valentine’s Day dinner while assisting with the search, a moment that highlighted their unwavering dedication.

The Swim Challenge

Inspired by the volunteers’ commitment, Kate, who onyl began swimming in June 2025, embarked on an ambitious swim challenge to support MSAR. She chose to swim the equivalent of the length of the River Blackwater, 169km, completing 120 laps of the garryvoe Hotel and Health Club’s swimming pool over 56 consecutive days, with only Christmas Day as a rest day.

Mallow Search and Rescue: A Vital Service

Mallow Search and rescue provides a critical service to the community, responding to incidents in and around the waterways. Recently, MSAR participated in a multi-agency search on the River Lee for a man from Co. Tyrone, Shea McCabe, who tragically died in a drowning accident. The remains of Mr. McCabe were recovered on St. Stephen’s day with the assistance of MSAR’s side-scan sonar and divers.

John Wolfe, Chairperson of MSAR, emphasized the importance of continuous equipment upgrades and training to maintain the effectiveness of their search and rescue operations. He highlighted the value of specialized equipment like side-scan sonar, which was previously donated by the family of Brian Ó Tuama, who tragically drowned in 2009. MSAR operates solely on volunteer efforts and public fundraising, with daily search costs ranging from €200-€300.

Exceeding Expectations

Kate’s initial fundraising goal was €50,000, and she has already surpassed expectations, raising over €6,000, with donations continuing to increase. The funds will be instrumental in supporting MSAR’s vital work.

“It was bittersweet,” Kate shared after completing the challenge. “my body and mind are tired, but the daily swims kept Cormac’s memory and MSAR at the forefront.”

Donations to Mallow Search and Rescue can be made via GoFundMe.
