South Gate Bar Set to Revitalize Cork’s Nightlife Ahead of St. Patrick’s Day
Cork’s newest bar complex, South Gate, is preparing for its grand opening this Thursday, promising a fresh addition to the city’s vibrant nightlife. The venue, formerly known as the Flying Enterprise and Courtyard, has undergone a significant renovation following a €5 million sale in November .
A New Chapter for a Cork Landmark
The South Gate, inspired by the neighboring South Gate Bridge – a historic landmark connecting people to the city for over 300 years – aims to build on the legacy of its predecessor. The complex was built up over 45 years by Finbarr and Dolly O’Shea, who expanded the original traditional bar and added elements like apartments and Quay News, a newsagency, deli and off-licence .
New Ownership and Vision
The new owners, Sengfund Investment Limited, are a local buyer with international backing. They also own the Royal Palace Chinese Restaurant and two Princes Street restaurants, Pearl River and Nosh 19 . The sale encompassed the Courtyard Bar, capable of hosting 700 people, a shop, Quay News, an off-licence, and five apartments. This deal was one of the largest bar sales in Munster in recent years, second only to the combined sale of Reardens and the Oliver Plunkett Bar for approximately €30 million .
Opening Details and Anticipation
Operations manager Paul O’Dea has indicated that preparations for the opening are progressing well . The South Gate will open its doors at noon on Thursday, offering “cold pints, great food, [and] good vibes” . The opening coincides with the build-up to Cork’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations , promising a lively atmosphere for both locals and visitors.
Cork St. Patrick’s Festival
The South Gate’s opening is timed perfectly with the Cork St. Patrick’s Festival, which runs from March 13th to March 17th, 2026 . The festival parade, taking place on March 17th at 1 pm, will celebrate the city’s diverse community .
