Cornell Wrestling: A Legacy of Champions
Cornell University’s wrestling program has established itself as a powerhouse in collegiate athletics, consistently producing elite athletes and national champions. The Big Red have a rich history of success, boasting over 20 NCAA champions, including the remarkable achievements of Kyle Dake and Yianni Diakomihalis, both four-time national titleholders.
A Tradition of Excellence
Cornell wrestling, under the guidance of head coach Mike Grey, continues to build upon its storied tradition. In 2025, the team secured its first Ivy League Wrestling Tournament title, demonstrating its dominance within the conference. This success was further underscored by qualifying all ten of its wrestlers for the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year, a testament to the program’s depth and talent.
The Rise of Yianni Diakomihalis
Yianni Diakomihalis, born April 11, 1999, in Rochester, New York, has become a central figure in Cornell’s wrestling success. He competes in both freestyle and folkstyle wrestling at 70 kilograms and currently holds the title of RAF Lightweight Champion in the Lightweight division of Real American Freestyle. Diakomihalis achieved significant milestones early in his career, including a 2022 World silver medal at 65 kilograms, two Pan American championships, and two U17 World championships [1].
As a freshman at Cornell, Diakomihalis quickly made his mark, winning the Bearcat Open, New York State Intercollegiate, and the Cliff Keen Invitational, compiling a 28-1 regular season record. He then claimed the EIWA conference title and went on to win his first NCAA championship, becoming only the second Big Red rookie to do so, joining Kyle Dake [2]. His journey to the title included a victory over the two-time defending national champion, Dean Heil of Oklahoma State [1].
The Legacy of Kyle Dake
Yianni Diakomihalis’s accomplishments place him alongside Kyle Dake, an Olympic bronze medalist and reigning world champion, as the only two Cornell wrestlers to achieve the rare feat of winning four NCAA titles [3]. The two champions were even seen training together before the 2024 Spartan Combat Clinic [4].
Looking Ahead
With a strong foundation of talented wrestlers and a dedicated coaching staff, Cornell wrestling is poised to continue its tradition of excellence. The program’s commitment to developing champions and its consistent success on the national stage solidify its position as one of the premier wrestling programs in the country.
