Heroic Couple Saves Mother and Son from Rogue Wave at Middle Cove Beach
A couple visiting Middle Cove Beach in Newfoundland and Labrador rescued a mother and son after a large wave swept them into the frigid surf earlier this week. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ocean’s unpredictable nature and the importance of caution near the water.
The Rescue
Emily Barbour and her boyfriend, Stephen Browne, were at Middle Cove Beach to observe the waves when a sudden, large wave inundated the beach, pulling a woman and her son into the water. According to Barbour, the wave struck quickly, and she immediately reacted when she heard the woman screaming.
“All of a sudden, this bigger wave came in and we started running, and I heard her screaming and I just turned around and she was in the water, I could see the frantic appear on her face. I just grabbed her and we rushed ashore as quick as possible,” Barbour recounted in a statement.
Immediate Aftermath
The mother and son were shaken but unharmed, and the couple ensured they were able to receive warm and return home safely. Barbour expressed relief and gratitude that they were present to help, stating, “I’m just glad, and we thank God we were there to help.” El-Balad.com reported on the rescue, highlighting the swift response of the couple.
Previous Incidents at Middle Cove Beach
This incident is not isolated. In September 2008, a rogue wave struck Middle Cove Beach, reaching 20 metres inland and impacting several families enjoying a late-summer evening. CBC News reported that two adults and two children were carried out to sea, and several others were knocked off their feet. Witnesses and first responders, including a mother who went after her son, assisted in the rescue, with no serious injuries reported.
Safety Reminders
Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance when near the ocean and urge individuals to heed warnings about unpredictable waves. The incident at Middle Cove Beach underscores the potential dangers of coastal environments, even on seemingly calm days.
