Trump Threatens Cuba as Island Nation Faces Blackout and Earthquake

Cuba is struggling to restore power after a nationwide blackout as U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to “take” the island nation, escalating tensions amid an ongoing oil blockade. The crisis is compounded by a recent 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Cuba.

Power Grid Collapse and U.S. Sanctions

The complete shutdown of Cuba’s national grid left 10 million people without electricity, according to Union Nacional Electrica de Cuba (UNE). As of Tuesday, March 17, 2026, approximately two-thirds of the country had power restored, but concerns remain about the fragility of the aging electricity system. Daily power outages of up to 20 hours are common in parts of the island due to a lack of fuel needed for power generation.

The current energy crisis has been exacerbated by a de facto oil blockade imposed by the U.S. Since January 3, 2026, following the U.S. Ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Cuba’s key ally. No oil has been imported to the island since January 9, 2026, impacting not only power generation but also airline operations and the crucial tourism sector.

Trump’s Assertions and Potential Intervention

President Trump, speaking at the White House on Monday, March 16, 2026, stated his intention to intervene in Cuba. “You know, all my life I’ve been hearing about the United States and Cuba. When will the United States do it?” Trump said. “I do believe I’ll be… having the honour of taking Cuba,” he continued, adding, “Whether I free it, take it – suppose I could do anything I want with it. They’re a very weakened nation right now.”

According to Al Jazeera, the Trump administration has reportedly signaled to Cuban officials that it desires the removal of President Miguel Diaz-Canel from power.

Earthquake Adds to Challenges

Adding to the difficulties facing Cuba, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 95 kilometers from Guantanamo. Aawsat reported the quake occurred after a 5.0-magnitude quake was recorded off the coast of Cuba on March 6, 2026. As of this report, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Economic Adjustments

In an attempt to alleviate economic pressure and potentially meet U.S. Demands, a senior Cuban economic official announced on Monday, March 16, 2026, that Cuban exiles would now be permitted to invest and own businesses in Cuba.
