Call for Safety Changes After Dentist Killed Cycling in Norristown

NORRISTOWN, Pa.(WPVI) — A community is demanding change at a busy Norristown intersection following the death of a beloved dentist struck while riding his bicycle.

Cyclists are now advocating for safety improvements at the location.

“It’s just very tragic what happened to the poor guy. It’s a shame,” said Terry Kulliver, of Lafayette Hill.

Norristown police report that 70-year-old Dr. jerald Matt, a local dentist, was killed while cycling along the Schuylkill River Trail in Norristown.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Main Street and Lafayette Street.Witnesses say Dr. Matt was hit by a vehicle making a turn.

“He was a splendid dentist, a wonderful man. Always smiling, always pleasant,” said patient Susan Miller. “This is a huge loss for the community.”

Advocates are calling for several changes, including dedicated bike lanes, improved signage, and reduced speed limits in the area. Thay believe these measures could prevent future tragedies.

“We need to make this intersection safer for everyone – cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers,” stated mark Reynolds, a member of the local cycling advocacy group, Bike Norristown. “Dr. Matt’s death is a wake-up call.”

Norristown officials have acknowledged the concerns and say they are reviewing the intersection to determine the best course of action. They plan to conduct a traffic study and consider implementing safety enhancements.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss and are committed to making our streets safer for all residents,” said Norristown Township Supervisor Thomas Johnson. “We will work with the community to find solutions.”

A memorial ride is planned for this weekend to honor Dr. Matt and raise awareness about bicycle safety. details can be found on the Bike Norristown website: https://www.bikenorristown.org/
