Czech Arms Factory Fire Investigated as Potential Terror Attack
Czech authorities are investigating a fire that broke out on Friday morning at a facility owned by LPP Holding, an arms producer with ties to Ukraine, as a potential act of terrorism. Interior Minister Lubomir Metnar announced the investigation on X, stating there is a “probable connection with a terrorist attack.”
Fire and Claims of Responsibility
The fire occurred at a warehouse in Pardubice, approximately 100 kilometers east of Prague. According to firefighters, the blaze destroyed a warehouse and spread to an administrative building before being brought under control. No injuries were reported.
A group calling itself “Earthquake Faction” claimed responsibility for the fire in emails sent to several Czech media outlets. The group described the LPP Holding facility as “a key production center for Israeli weapons” and linked the attack to conflicts in Palestine, Iran, and Lebanon. Czech police are currently verifying the reliability of this information.
LPP Holding and Drone Production
LPP Holding, which develops and produces drones and other military equipment, confirmed the fire occurred at its premises and is cooperating with investigators. The company recently unveiled plans to produce drones with Israel’s Elbit Systems, according to the Czech news agency CTK. But, LPP spokeswoman Martina Tauberova stated that the company “never started producing Israeli drones” after the Ministry of Defense canceled a related tender.
Currently, LPP Holding focuses on producing drones for Ukraine.
Political Context and International Relations
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has declined to comment on potential Russian involvement in the incident. The Czech Republic is a historical ally of Israel and, under President Petr Pavel, has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine against Russia. However, the current nationalist government led by Prime Minister Babis has refrained from providing state military aid to Ukraine, a departure from the policy of the previous center-right cabinet.
Previous Attacks on Elbit Systems
Elbit Systems, the Israeli defense company with which LPP Holding had planned to collaborate, has been the target of attacks in Europe previously. In 2024, a 13-year-old boy allegedly opened fire on Elbit’s Swedish office, and explosives were planted at the same site. The Palestine Action group was also charged in 2024 over a break-in at an Elbit factory in Britain.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, with forensic work expected to take several days.
