Dainis Grūbe: A Latvian Actor’s Journey from Stage to Screen

Latvian actor Dainis Grūbe celebrated his 42nd birthday on February 28th, marking a career spanning over two decades on stage, and screen. From his early days at the Dailes Theatre to his recent roles in film and television, Grūbe continues to captivate audiences with his versatility and dedication to his craft.

Early Career and Dailes Theatre

Dainis Grūbe began his journey at the Dailes Theatre in 2005, entering the theatre’s 9th studio and graduating in 2009. He officially joined the Dailes Theatre troupe in 2010, though he had already begun participating in performances in 2007. He quickly became a beloved figure, earning the “Gamers’ Night” award for Best Actor for two consecutive seasons – 2013/2014 for his role as Ben in “Outcasts” and Song Liling in “M. Butterfly,” and 2014/2015 as Alan Strang in “Equus” and Michael in “All Her Books.”

A Shift Towards Freelance Work

In July 2021, Grūbe announced his departure from the Dailes Theatre to pursue freelance opportunities. At the time, Dailes Theatre director Juris Žagars clarified that Grūbe hadn’t left entirely, but was taking time to work independently. Four and a half years later, Grūbe has not returned to a permanent position at the theatre, focusing instead on a variety of projects.

Recent Projects: Film, Television, and Stage

Grūbe’s recent work includes a leading role in the historical drama “Rebellion” (2024), where he portrays Valeriya Shpagin, based on real events surrounding a mutiny on a USSR warship in Riga. He also appears in the relationship drama “Perfect” (2026), a Latvian adaptation of the Italian film “Perfetti sconosciuti,” alongside Anete Kursīte, Linda Kalniņa, Dārta Daneviča, Intars Rešetins-Pētersons, Jānis Āmanis, and Mārtiņš Egliens. The film explores themes of privacy and trust in the digital age.

Grūbe continues to be involved in television, hosting the popular Sunday show “Koru Kari” on TV3 for the second consecutive year, overseeing the competition between 10 city choirs. He also co-created and performs in “Dangerous Zone,” a musically comedic show with musician Mārcis Auziņš at the Music House “Daile,” reflecting on growing up in Latvia in the 1990s.

Balancing Work and Family

Grūbe prioritizes spending quality time with his family, including his wife and daughters, Reina (15 in March) and Maija (12 in April). He often celebrates his birthday with a simple tradition of dining out together. This year, he expressed a desire to go to the cinema with his family before going to a restaurant, valuing the opportunity to disconnect from daily routines and connect with loved ones. He previously promised himself and his family a year and a half of rest after leaving the Dailes Theatre, and has maintained a commitment to professional integrity, only taking on projects he can fully dedicate himself to.

Looking Ahead

Grūbe remains open to new creative opportunities even as maintaining a focus on balance and quality. He expressed a desire for peace and resolution to the war in Ukraine, highlighting his concern for global events and his hope for a more peaceful future.
