Delta Flight Returns to Houston After Passenger Disturbance

HOUSTON – A Delta Air Lines flight from Houston’s Hobby Airport to Atlanta returned to Houston shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning after a passenger exhibited “unruly behavior,” according to airline and police officials.

What Happened?

Around 5:30 a.m. Local time, Delta Flight 2557 declared an emergency for arrival and landed safely back at William P. Hobby Airport, as reported by KTRK. The aircraft, a Boeing 717, was carrying 85 passengers and five crew members, according to KHOU.

Initial Reports and Clarification

Houston police initially responded to reports of a passenger attempting to breach the cockpit. However, Delta clarified that the passenger approached crew members and other passengers, exhibiting “unruly and unlawful behavior,” but did not attempt to access the flight deck. As ABC13 reported, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the incident.

Passenger Detained

Law enforcement met the plane upon its return to Hobby Airport. Police detained a passenger who may have been experiencing a mental health issue, according to Houston police. The passenger’s identity has not been released, and it is unclear if any charges will be filed.

Flight Resumes to Atlanta

After the incident, the flight re-departed for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, arriving approximately 90 minutes behind schedule. ABC7 reported that the flight ultimately landed in Atlanta.

Delta’s Statement
