Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Chevrolet Fails Pre-Race Inspection at EchoPark Speedway
Atlanta, GA – Austin Dillon and his No. 3 Richard Childress Racing (RCR) Chevrolet team encountered a setback ahead of the NASCAR Cup Series race at EchoPark Speedway. The car failed pre-qualifying inspection multiple times, resulting in penalties for the team, as confirmed on February 20, 2026. Sportskeeda and Athlon Sports reported on the issues.
Penalties Assessed to Dillon’s Team
As a consequence of failing inspection, car chief Ryan Chism has been ejected from the track for the remainder of the race weekend. The No. 3 team will forfeit their pit stall selection for Sunday’s race, potentially impacting their competitive advantage. Big 14 News detailed these penalties.
Second Attempt Successful
Despite the initial failures, Dillon’s car ultimately passed inspection on its third attempt, allowing him to qualify and retain his starting position.
BJ McLeod Also Faces Inspection Issues
Dillon was not the only team to face pre-race inspection challenges. BJ McLeod and the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet also failed inspection twice. Car chief Ryan Henderson was ejected, and the No. 78 team also lost their pit stall selection. As of February 20, 2026, the No. 78 team was scheduled for a third inspection attempt, with the possibility of a drive-through penalty at the start of the race if it failed again. The Sports Rush provided context on the track conditions.
EchoPark Speedway’s Evolving Character
Austin Dillon recently discussed the changes at EchoPark Speedway, noting that the track is “gaining character” with each passing season. The 2022 overhaul, which increased banking to 28 degrees and narrowed the track width, has created a unique racing environment characterized by drafting and close competition. Dillon emphasized the importance of handling as the track surface wears, adding that it’s become a “cool style of racing” that blends speedway racing with a significant handling component.
Dillon’s History at EchoPark Speedway
Dillon has an average finish of 21.0 at EchoPark Speedway across 18 starts, with only one top-10 finish. He finished outside the top 15 in both Atlanta races last season. Despite these challenges, he remains RCR’s most recent race winner, having secured a victory at Richmond Raceway in 2025.
