Do Speed Camera Apps Help or Hinder Road Safety?
Driving technologies like Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze have become indispensable for navigation. These apps provide valuable information, including the location of speed cameras and potential random breath testing stations. While this information can be helpful for avoiding penalties, a new study published in the journal *Safety Science* explores the complex impact of these apps on driver behaviour and road safety.
The Double-Edged Sword of App-Based Enforcement Alerts
Researchers from Queensland University of Technology conducted interviews and focus groups with 58 drivers to understand how the use of these apps influences perceptions of getting caught breaking road rules. Their findings revealed a mixed bag.
Positive Impacts
Some drivers reported using the app’s alerts to adjust their driving behaviour, slowing down near cameras and refraining from using their phones while driving. The apps’ visual cues and speed limit displays served as timely reminders to comply with traffic regulations.
One participant noted, “It just gives you a warning like, ‘OK, you need to check your speed.’ Just to double-check you’re going on the right speed perhaps or when it’s a camera coming up.”
Concerning Trends
However, the research also uncovered potentially concerning trends. Some drivers admitted to engaging in risky behaviours, such as posting traffic updates on their apps while driving and even mentioning a perceived sense of invincibility. This suggests that the very app designed to deter violations might, in some instances, embolden reckless driving.
One driver expressed, “I probably feel slightly more invincible, which is probably not a good thing.”
Accuracy and Reliance on Technology
It’s crucial to remember that these apps don’t always provide completely accurate information. Camera locations can be outdated, and the apps can’t capture all police activities. This reliance on digital alerts should not diminish the need for drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to road rules regardless of whether alerts are present.
