Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Targeted by Fan Interference in Game 4 Loss to Yankees
The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a setback in their World Series pursuit, falling to the New York Yankees 11-4 in Game 4. The loss, however, was overshadowed by a jarring incident involving star outfielder Mookie Betts and unruly fan interference in the first inning.
Betts, a six-time Gold Glove winner, made a leaping catch in foul territory on a fly ball by Yankees leadoff hitter Gleyber Torres. As he secured the ball, a fan in a road gray jersey, later identified as Austin Capobianco, attempted to wrest the ball from Betts’ glove, while another fan grabbed Betts’ throwing hand.
The blatant fan interference resulted in the ball falling to the warning track and a surprisingly quick ejection of both fans from the stadium. Umpire Mark Carlson immediately called fan interference, ruling Torres out.
“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Betts said after the game, frustrated by the Dodgers’ inability to complete a four-game sweep of the Yankees but happy to have avoided serious injury on the play. “But there’s always a first time for a first.”
