LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially re-signed right-handed relief pitcher Evan phillips to a one-year contract worth $6.5 million, the team announced Wednesday.
Phillips, 31, faced a challenging 2024 season, limited to just seven appearances before undergoing Tommy John surgery in late May. This necessitated the dodgers’ decision not to tender him a contract initially, allowing him to enter free agency during his rehabilitation process.
Prior to his injury, Phillips established himself as a crucial component of the Dodgers’ bullpen from 2022 through 2024, amassing a remarkable 2.21 ERA with 44 saves. His performance peaked in 2023 when he assumed the role of the team’s closer, achieving a 2.05 ERA and securing 24 saves.
The dodgers have been actively strengthening their bullpen this offseason, highlighted by the acquisition of Edwin Díaz, the former New York Mets closer, who signed a three-year, $69 million contract. Phillips’ return adds further depth and experience to the relief corps.
To create a roster spot for Phillips, the Dodgers designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment.
