Maple Leafs, Canucks, and Flames Navigate Crucial Trade Deadline Period

The NHL trade deadline is fast approaching, and several teams are at pivotal points in their seasons. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, and Calgary Flames, the next few games will be critical in determining whether they buy, sell, or hold at the March 6th deadline. Recent developments, including Auston Matthews’ Olympic gold medal and potential shifts in team strategies, are adding complexity to the situation.

Maple Leafs Weigh Playoff Push

The Toronto Maple Leafs currently sit six points out of a wild card playoff spot. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the next two to three games are “extremely crucial, if not crucial” to the direction General Manager Brad Treliving will take the team. TSN reports that the Leafs are not in a position to “travel all in” but are likewise not ready to fully embrace a sell-off strategy.

The potential return of captain Auston Matthews, fresh off a gold medal win with Team USA at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, is a significant factor. The initial plan for Team USA’s visit to Washington D.C. For a State of the Union address was altered, shifting the schedule to allow Matthews to potentially join the Leafs in Tampa for their Wednesday game against the Lightning. Dreger noted the importance of having Matthews in the lineup against Tampa.

If the Leafs struggle in the coming games, forward Bobby McMann, a pending unrestricted free agent, could become a valuable trade asset. Scott Laughton is also identified as a potential trade piece, though the Leafs reportedly prefer to re-sign McMann if they remain in playoff contention.

Canucks Consider Significant Changes

The Vancouver Canucks, currently struggling, are openly considering significant changes. Dreger reports renewed trade discussions involving Elias Pettersson prior to the Olympic break, and those conversations continued during the break.

Pettersson possesses a no-move clause, and the Canucks have engaged with his representative, JP Barry, but have not yet presented a trade offer deemed worthwhile enough for Pettersson to consider waiving that clause. The Canucks are also likely to explore trades involving pending unrestricted free agent Evander Kane, potentially focusing on smaller deals if they cannot secure a satisfactory return for Pettersson.

Flames Gauge Market for Kadri

The Calgary Flames, 11 points out of a playoff spot, are fielding significant interest in forward Nazem Kadri. Dreger indicates that offers have already been made, but General Manager Craig Conroy is taking a patient approach, assessing the market for other players, such as Ryan O’Reilly of the Nashville Predators.

Kadri has expressed a desire to be traded to a contending team, and Conroy is exploring potential deals that would benefit both the Flames and Kadri’s aspirations.
