Dunkin’s $7,500 Donation to Open Door Mission Inspired by Local Fifth Grader

Dunkin’ restaurants recently presented a $7,500 check to the Open Door Mission, a donation stemming from a campaign ignited by the philanthropic efforts of Grayson Thomas, a fifth grader from the Omaha area. The funds will provide an estimated 3,700 meals to individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty.

A Young Leader’s Impact

Grayson Thomas has spent several years collecting and donating hygiene kits to various local nonprofits. His dedication inspired Dunkin’ to launch “Free Donut Fridays” in December and January. During this promotion, customers received a free donut with every drink purchase, and for each drink sold, Dunkin’ donated $1 to the Open Door Mission.

Open Door Mission’s Response

Gwynne Gonnerman, Director of Philanthropy at Open Door Mission, highlighted the importance of youth involvement in community service. “We love when our youth invest in our community. Because Grayson right now is a leader already. He is making a difference. He is advocating for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and poverty,” she stated.

Addressing Food Insecurity in Omaha

The Open Door Mission estimates the $7,500 donation will be used to provide approximately 3,700 meals to those in need. This contribution comes at a critical time, as organizations in Omaha continue to address the ongoing challenges of homelessness and food insecurity. According to Open Door Mission, around 200 children are among the 6,000 people experiencing homelessness in Omaha annually.

Grayson Thomas’s Earlier Work

Prior to the Dunkin’ partnership, Grayson Thomas was already actively involved in supporting the community. In October 2025, he crafted special birthday kits for children experiencing homelessness, including cake mix, frosting, soda, and candles. He as well included candy bags for Halloween. He assembled hygiene kits containing essential toiletries like razors, combs, shampoo, and toothbrushes.

Amy Harvey, Open Door Mission’s chief community relations officer, emphasized the significance of Thomas’s efforts: “It’s a really big deal for our people to experience seen and to feel like people care about them.”
