Norway’s Grocery Price War: Oda, Kiwi, Rema 1000, and Extra Battle for Consumers

Norwegian shoppers are benefiting from a fierce price war among grocery retailers, sparked by online disruptor Oda and rapidly evolving into a tech-driven competition. Although initially focused on Easter confectionery, the battle highlights a shift towards dynamic pricing and data-driven retail strategies.

Oda Initiates Price Cuts, Competitors Respond

Oda initiated the price cuts on approximately 70 items, primarily Easter-related sweets, prompting responses from Kiwi and Extra. Rema 1000 initially opted out of broad price matching, instead focusing on targeted promotions, such as discounted oranges. Although, Rema 1000 later followed suit with broader price reductions.

Dynamic Pricing Takes Center Stage

The price war demonstrates a key shift towards dynamic pricing, where retailers leverage data analytics to adjust prices in real-time. This means prices can fluctuate throughout the day based on competitor actions, demand, and inventory levels. This system requires increased shopper vigilance and tech savviness to identify the best deals.

Kiwi’s Fluctuating Prices and Subsequent Adjustments

Recent price tests reveal that Kiwi implemented price cuts for a limited time before raising prices again. For example, the price of Farris Naturell 0.5 liter varied significantly: Extra and Rema 1000 offered it for 12.00 NOK, Oda for 12.05 NOK, while Kiwi charged 22.40 NOK. Kiwi has since adjusted prices, aiming to be competitive, but remains the most expensive in some comparisons.

Price Discrepancies on Popular Products

Significant price differences exist on popular items. As of March 6, 2026, a large milk chocolate bar from Freia costs 29.90 NOK at both Extra and Kiwi, reflecting Oda’s price cut. However, Rema 1000 maintains its price at 54.90 NOK – a 25 NOK difference. Similarly, Nidar’s marzipan sausages are considerably more expensive at Rema 1000 following Oda’s reduction to 30.90 NOK per package.

Current Price Comparisons (as of March 6, 2026)

According to a recent price test by Nettavisen:

  • Extra: 450.35 NOK
  • Rema 1000: 450.70 NOK (+0.1%)
  • Oda: 453.85 NOK (+0.8%)
  • Kiwi: 503.10 NOK (+11.7%)

Rema 1000’s Stance

Rema 1000 has confirmed they will not match the price cuts initiated by Oda, believing they remain the cheapest option for groceries overall.

Looking Ahead

The grocery price war in Norway is expected to continue, driven by Oda’s aggressive pricing strategy and the responses of traditional retailers. Shoppers are advised to remain vigilant and compare prices across different stores to secure the best deals, as price fluctuations become increasingly common.
