Ecuadorian Hockey Club ORKOS Bridges Inline and Ice Worlds

Despite lacking a dedicated ice hockey rink in Ecuador, the ORKOS club is fostering a pathway for Ecuadorian athletes to compete internationally in both inline and ice hockey, emphasizing youth development and a strategic approach to the sport’s growth within the country.

From Inline to Ice: A Strategic Transition

ORKOS initially navigated the transition from quad hockey to inline hockey as the sport evolved. Lucas Romero, a key figure within the club, explains that this wasn’t a replacement but a strategic continuation. “Inline hockey allowed us to maintain a competitive rhythm, develop technique, speed and vision of the game. More than a replacement, it was a strategic continuity.” The club embraced the change as a challenge, ensuring continued activity and preparedness for potential ice hockey opportunities in Ecuador or abroad.

Investing in Future Generations

A pivotal moment for ORKOS was its commitment to youth development. Recognizing that the growth of hockey in Ecuador couldn’t rely solely on the current generation, the club prioritized training children and young people. This approach focuses on building universal technical foundations that can facilitate a future transition to ice hockey.

International Exposure and Rising Talent

ORKOS players have actively participated in international tournaments in locations such as Ushuaia, Puerto Williams, Costa Rica, and are planning participation in events in the United States Lucas Romero and other club members represent Ecuadorian hockey and its values on these stages. Recently, a 12-year-old junior player from ORKOS competed in ice hockey outside of Ecuador and adapted naturally, validating the club’s training process.

Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Growth

Competing internationally presents a transformative experience for young Ecuadorian athletes, broadening their perspectives and reinforcing the value of their training. The presence of Ecuadorian players in international ice hockey tournaments often sparks surprise, as many are unaware of hockey’s existence in Ecuador. Yet, this surprise serves as a motivator for the team.

Inline Hockey Leagues and Competition

Ecuadorian players participate in various inline hockey leagues. Lucas Romero has career stats including 10 games played, 8 goals, 1 assist, and 9 total points, with a points-per-game average of 0.9, and 3 penalty minutes (inlinehockeydb.com). Players have also been involved in leagues such as the California Mission Bauer Elite State Wars (Pro) and CA Mission DS Elite AAA State Wars (Pro) (inlinehockeydb.com). Durham Inline Hockey also has players involved in various leagues (Facebook).

The Future of Hockey in Ecuador

ORKOS’s continued international presence demonstrates the project’s vitality and its commitment to developing Ecuadorian hockey talent. The club is poised to capitalize on opportunities to transition to ice hockey as they arise, building on a solid foundation of training and international experience.
