Racist Abuse Marred Edogbo’s Ireland Debut, Says Johnny Sexton

Former Ireland captain Johnny Sexton has condemned the online racist abuse directed at Munster second row Edwin Edogbo following his international debut against Italy in the Six Nations. Sexton stated the abuse marred what should have been a special day for the 23-year-old player and his family.

Debut Tarnished by Online Attacks

Edogbo, born and raised in County Cork to Nigerian parents, was targeted on social media after coming off the bench in Saturday’s 20-13 victory over Italy in Dublin. Sexton, who captained Ireland from 2019 until his retirement in 2023, expressed his dismay at the continued existence of such abuse.

“It’s horrible to see in this day and age that it still exists like that,” Sexton told reporters on Tuesday. He added that while Edogbo appeared to be handling the situation well, “it’s not right some of the comments that were made. I perceive for him and feel for his family. It’s marred a pretty special day for him.”

IRFU Investigating the Abuse

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has confirmed it is investigating the racist abuse and is working with data technology company Signify and relevant authorities to report the incidents. The IRFU reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards racism in any form. They were forced to turn off comments on social media posts congratulating Edogbo due to the abusive replies.

An IRFU spokesperson stated, “We’re aware of some targeted abuse online in recent days and continue to work with Signify and the relevant authorities to report it. We will also continue to fully support all affected by the cowardly actions of a minority and investigations are underway alongside our partners Signify.” Source: Sky Sports
