Marcos Orders Electricity Bill Relief for Typhoon Kristine Victims
In response to the devastating impact of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has directed the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to explore temporary relief measures for electricity bill payments in affected areas.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced on Tuesday, October 29, that President Marcos has instructed the ERC to study the possibility of implementing a moratorium on electricity disconnections and bill collections from October to December 2024 in areas declared under a state of calamity due to the typhoon.
The initiative also aims to provide flexible payment options to alleviate the financial burden on residents and support their recovery efforts. These measures are part of the government’s broader response to assist communities impacted by Typhoon Kristine, which ravaged much of Luzon last week.
Government Aid for Typhoon Victims
The Palace statement emphasized the President’s commitment to aid in the recovery process:
“To aid in recovery efforts, the President directed the ERC to study the immediate implementation of a moratorium on electricity line disconnection and payment collection for the period October to December 2024 in areas under State of Calamity due to STS Kristine, and staggered payments of electricity for the said months, as necessary,”
Last week, Typhoon Kristine unleashed heavy rainfall and strong winds across the country, leaving many communities submerged in floodwaters. The Bicol Region bore the brunt of the damage, experiencing the most significant destruction.
While this is a step towards providing relief, the situation in severly affected areas remains dire.
