The number of people with flu is increasing rapidly in the Netherlands. A week ago the RIVM already indicated that an epidemic seemed to be in sight.

Operations postponed

the RIVM states that there are currently no major problems for healthcare nationally, but that hospitals can take extra measures where necessary. “They may reserve certain departments specifically for flu patients, so that they are located together.”

The flu is causing problems in some hospitals. Such as, the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht was forced to postpone some planned operations due to higher-than-normal occupancy related to the flu.

Many people have been admitted there with serious flu complaints. Urgent procedures, for example in the oncology department, will continue, says the hospital with locations in Dordrecht, Zwijndrecht and Sliedrecht.

Limit value

The threshold for declaring a flu epidemic is based on the number of GP visits due to influenza-like illness. In recent years, this threshold has varied. For 2024, the RIVM is monitoring the situation closely, and the threshold is currently set at 46 per 100,000 people. A RIVM spokesperson explained that this number is determined every year based on a variety of factors, including the current circulation of viruses and the overall health of the population.

The annual flu epidemic typically peaks between January and March. The current increase in cases suggests the 2024 flu epidemic is developing now.
