Equinix Expands Irish Presence with Acquisition of BT’s Data Centers
Equinix, the world’s largest data center provider, announced today the acquisition of BT’s data center assets in Ireland. The deal, valued at €59 million, will see Equinix take ownership of two carrier-neutral data centers located in Dublin’s CityWest and Ballycoolin.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory and competition approvals.
Strengthening Digital Transformation in Ireland
The acquisition marks a significant step in Equinix’s ongoing expansion strategy in Ireland and further strengthens its commitment to enabling digital transformation across the nation.
"Equinix has a vital and long-established business in Ireland, with a strong track record of delivering huge value to individuals and companies throughout the Irish economy," said Peter Lantry, Managing Director, Equinix Ireland. "This acquisition of assets from our existing facility enables us to continue to offer exceptional interconnection services from our unique global platform, augmenting the EUR35M annual contribution to national economic output arising from Equinix’s direct and indirect spend, measured in 2022.”
Equinix will integrate the acquired data centers into its global network, providing customers with expanded connectivity, reliability, and colocation solutions.
BT’s Asset-Light Strategy
The move aligns with BT’s strategic shift towards an asset-light model for its international data center operations. BT is transitioning away from owning and operating its own facilities, instead partnering with leading global data center providers like Equinix.
