Equinix Invests $700 Million in Irish Manufacturing Facility, Creating 200 Jobs
Data centre builder and operator Equinix is investing up to $700 million (€594 million) in a new advanced manufacturing facility in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. The project is expected to create 200 jobs and establish a global hub for the production of specialized power equipment for data centres and AI-driven workloads.
Facility Details and Investment Scope
The 14,000 square meter (150,000 square foot) facility will be constructed by Hanley Energy, a company recently acquired by Jabil [Irish Times]. Equinix has committed to a minimum investment of $70 million annually for an initial five-year period, with the potential to extend to ten years [RTÉ].
Manufacturing Focus and Technological Advancement
The facility will manufacture critical components for data centre power distribution, including low-voltage switchgear, Power Distribution Units (PDUs), and Remote Power Panels (RPPs) [LMFM]. Equinix anticipates achieving 10-15% faster lead times compared to traditional procurement methods with this new facility [Irish Times]. It will also house a temperature-controlled testing laboratory, the only one of its kind in Ireland or the UK [Irish Times].
Job Creation and Skills Development
Hiring for the factory has already begun, focusing on 200 engineers and technicians specializing in precision engineering, quality assurance, and lean manufacturing [RTÉ]. Apprenticeship and training programs will also be implemented to develop local talent [LMFM].
Industry and Government Response
Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed the announcement, stating it is a “major boost for the region and for our national economy” [RTÉ]. Adaire Fox-Martin, CEO and President of Equinix, highlighted the investment’s role in meeting growing customer demand and supporting the local community [RTÉ]. John O’Driscoll, CEO of Hanley Energy, emphasized the strength of Irish engineering and innovation through this partnership [RTÉ].
Strategic Implications
This investment underscores Ireland’s attractiveness as a location for digital infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and global technology partnerships [LMFM]. By establishing a dedicated manufacturing hub, Equinix aims to enhance its supply chain resilience and responsiveness in a rapidly growing market for data centre solutions.
