Eric Schmidt Returns to North Dakota as Head Football Coach

In a move that sends shockwaves through the NCAA Football universe, former North Dakota defensive coordinator Eric Schmidt has been named the 28th head coach of the Fighting Hawks football program.

The announcement, made on Sunday evening by Director of Athletics Bill Chaves, saw Schmidt return to the program he played for and served as a defensive stalwart. He boasts a wealth of experience at various levels of collegiate football, with recent stints at prestigious programs like San Diego State and the University of Washington.

A Resume Steeped in Success

Schmidt brings an impressive resume to the Fighting Hawks, marked by consistent success and development of talented student-athletes.

• Just a year ago, he served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at San Diego State, guiding four players to All-Mountain West honors and contributing to a formidable defense.
• Prior to that, Schmidt was instrumental in the University of Washington’s remarkable run to the College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2023, where they secured the No. 2 seed with an undefeated regular season and a resounding PAC-12 Championship victory.
• His tenure at Washington saw the Huskies rank among the nation’s best in various defensive categories, including interceptions, punt return defense, and turnovers gained.
• Before his foray into the FBS, Schmidt spent two seasons at Fresno State, leading the Bulldogs to top-25 rankings in multiple defensive categories.

Bringing His Expertise Back Home

Schmidt’s first stint as a coach at North Dakota was from 2014-2019, where his experience as a defensive coordinator led the team to two FCS playoff appearances, including their historic first appearance in 2016.

His commitment to developing strong defenses is evident in his track record at North Dakota, where the Hawks consistently ranked among the nation’s elite in rush defense.
