The initial phase of the vaccination drive will prioritize healthcare workers and individuals identified as being at high risk of infection. A total of 2,500 doses of the vaccine are currently available. Health authorities emphasize that vaccination is a crucial component of the broader response strategy, which includes enhanced surveillance, contact tracing, and robust infection control measures.
The outbreak was initially confirmed on November 14, 2025, in Jinka town, following laboratory tests on samples from suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever. As of December 6, 2025, Ethiopia has reported 13 confirmed cases and 8 deaths related to the Marburg virus. Four patients have recovered, and one remains under medical care. https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease-outbreaks/marburg-virus-disease-ethiopia
Understanding Marburg Virus Disease
Marburg virus is a highly virulent and deadly pathogen that causes severe hemorrhagic fever. It is a member of the Filoviridae family, which also includes the Ebola virus. https://www.cdc.gov/vhf/marburg/index.html Symptoms typically appear within 2-21 days of exposure and include high fever, severe headache, muscle pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
The virus spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected people, animals, or contaminated materials. There is currently no approved cure for Marburg virus disease; treatment focuses on supportive care, such as rehydration and managing symptoms. The cAd3-Marburg vaccine, developed by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has shown promising results in early trials. https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/nih-supported-vaccine-shows-promise-against-marburg-virus
