Eugenio Suárez enjoys full-circle ALCS moment with Mariners

TORONTO — Cal Raleigh couldn’t publicly say it at the time during All-Star Media Day in Atlanta. But the Mariners’ catcher privately told Eugenio Suárez that he was thrilled the veteran infielder was now his teammate. Raleigh recounted a story from his youth, watching Suárez play for the Reds and dreaming of one day sharing a field with him.

Fast forward to Tuesday night, and Suárez was standing at the plate in the ninth inning of a tied ALCS Game 2, a chance to give the Mariners a late lead. He delivered, launching a go-ahead home run off of Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano that ultimately propelled Seattle to a 10-9 victory.

“It’s special,” Suárez said, smiling after the game. “I remember when I was in Cincinnati, I was watching the playoffs, and I said, ‘One day, I want to be there.’ And now, I’m here. It’s a dream come true.”

The moment felt especially full-circle for Suárez, who spent his first eight seasons with the Reds, a team that consistently fell short of postseason contention. He was a key piece of a rebuilding cincinnati club, but never experienced October baseball until being traded to Seattle prior to the 2023 season.

“I think God put me here for a reason,” Suárez said.”I’m so happy to be here with this team, with thes guys. We’re fighting for something special.”

Suárez’s home run wasn’t just a clutch hit; it was a testament to his evolution as a player. Once known primarily for his power and defensive versatility, he’s become a respected veteran leader in the Mariners’ clubhouse. He’s embraced a role as a mentor to younger players, and his positive energy is infectious.

“he’s a great teammate, a great person,” Raleigh said. “He brings a lot of energy to the clubhouse, and he’s a guy you want to have up in those big spots.”

For Suárez, the opportunity to contribute to a winning team in the postseason is everything he’s ever wanted. And on Tuesday night, he seized the moment, delivering a home run that will be remembered in Mariners history – and a moment that brought a childhood dream to life.

Suárez’s Return to Seattle Feels Like a Storybook

The empty locker that awaited Eugenio Suárez upon his return to the Mariners wasn’t a mistake. it sat vacant, the first one upon entering the home clubhouse at T-Mobile Park – a fitting space for a player who has always been the most outgoing presence in that surroundings. Suárez treats everyone he encounters with boisterous energy, a wink, a fist pump, a pat on the back, and his trademark smile, whether teammate, clubbie, coach, or media member.

His return has quickly taken on a storybook quality. No moment encapsulated that more than when he sat at the postgame podium on Friday, on the verge of tears, alongside his daughters, Nicolle and Melanie. Both girls were also present in 2022, during the AL wild Card Series against the Blue Jays, when the Mariners advanced in the playoffs.

Was this the most emotional Suárez has ever been on a baseball field? “To be honest,I want to say yes,” Suárez said. “I’ve had a good amount of stunning moments in my career, but today is something else. to hit that grand slam and help my team win games in the postseason, a big game here in front of our fans. Thay have been waiting for a long time, and myself, too. I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole career.”

Understanding MLB Divisions: A Fan’s Guide

Major League Baseball isn’t just one big league. It’s carefully structured into divisions, which impact playoff contention and create intense rivalries. Here’s a breakdown of how MLB divisions work, what they are, and which teams belong to each.

What are MLB Divisions?

MLB divides its 30 teams into six divisions: three in the American League (AL) and three in the National League (NL). This structure creates a more competitive regular season and a clearer path to the playoffs. Teams primarily play within their division, fostering regional rivalries and familiar matchups.
