Europe Increases Military Aid to Ukraine Through New Production

Europe is increasingly providing its military aid for Ukraine from new production instead of drawing from existing depots – a significant change in strategy.Current data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy demonstrates this shift.

This change coincides with the expansion of the European defense industry and the United States, under President Donald Trump, beginning to sell weapons to Ukraine rather of donating newly produced equipment as military aid.

“Europe has now committed more funding to new arms contracts than the United States,” said Taro Nishikawa, head of Ukraine Support Tracker at the Kiel Institute.”this marks a clear change away from withdrawing from depots to industrial production.”

According to the institute, at least 4.6 billion euros of the total 10.5 billion euros in European military aid for Ukraine in May and June was allocated to such procurements. Since the start of Russia’s invasion in 2022, European producers have newly manufactured and delivered military goods and ammunition worth a total of 35.1 billion euros, according to the institute’s calculations.
