K+S Backs EU Raw Materials Initiative, Advocates for Broadened Scope
Germany’s leading mining company, K+S, has voiced it’s support for the European Commission’s RESourcEU Action Plan, an initiative designed to bolster Europe’s supply of raw materials. Dr. Christian H. Meyer, CEO of the Kassel-based salt and fertilizer manufacturer, acknowledges the plan as a positive development towards securing vital resources for the continent. Though, K+S argues that the streamlining of processes and regulations should extend beyond “critical raw materials” to encompass the wider spectrum of domestically produced minerals and metallic raw materials.
The RESourcEU Action Plan, launched in March 2023,aims to strengthen the EU’s domestic raw materials supply chain, reduce reliance on foreign sources, and promote sustainable mining practices. https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_23_1184 K+S’s position emphasizes the importance of supporting all European mining operations, not solely those focused on materials currently designated as “critical” – those with a high supply risk and economic importance.
Dr. Meyer contends that a broader approach will foster a more resilient and diversified European raw materials sector, contributing to the EU’s strategic autonomy and industrial competitiveness. K+S produces a variety of essential minerals, including salt, potash, and magnesium, which are vital for agriculture, industry, and chemical production. The company believes that simplifying permitting processes and reducing administrative burdens for all mineral extraction projects will unlock significant potential for domestic resource development.
This perspective highlights a growing debate within the EU regarding the definition and prioritization of raw materials. While the focus on critical raw materials is understandable given geopolitical concerns and the demands of the green transition, K+S argues that overlooking other valuable resources could hinder the overall effectiveness of the RESourcEU plan.
