Motte: redefining Beauty and Accessibility
motte openly and confidently expresses his queerness thru his appearance.”For me, beauty is being myself, and for me, being gorgeous is also being a little bit on the offensive,” the 22-year-old shared on MDR KULTUR. He is equally candid about his physical disabilities.
Walking Stick and Hearing Aid as a Fashion Statement
The 22-year-old personalizes his hearing aids with vibrant green and pink rubber bands, coordinating with his hair color. His walking stick is similarly adorned with colorful stickers, transforming it into an accessory.
“You first have to come to terms with the fact that it’s not an earring.I can’t decide, I don’t want to wear it today.” But Motte believes embracing these tools makes it easier to feel beautiful. Because these aids are as colorful and expressive as he is, integrating them into his identity feels natural.
He donated one of his older walking sticks to the Hygiene Museum in Dresden. It’s now on display as one of 32 objects selected by individuals, primarily from Dresden, that hold personal meaning related to hygiene, styling, and self-presentation.
Intercultural Perspectives on Beauty and Identity
The exhibition at the Hygiene Museum explores diverse perspectives on beauty and self-expression. Motte’s contribution highlights how assistive devices can be integrated into personal style, challenging conventional notions of beauty and accessibility. The exhibit aims to showcase the varied ways people navigate self-care and presentation across diffrent cultures and experiences.
Motte’s openness and willingness to embrace his full self – queerness, disability, and all – serve as an inspiration. He demonstrates that beauty isn’t about conforming to standards, but about authentic self-expression.
