Facua warns that the same product can be up to 40% more expensive depending on the city in which it is purchased

Facua-Consumers in Action has carried out a study comparing the price of thirty products in five different cities and has found price variations of up to 40%.

As indicated by Facua in a press release, they have selected the products they have compared -among which there are dairy products, oils, drinks, pasta or baby items- in a “random” way and have mainly chosen well-known brands. In their analysis they have included three supermarket chains: Alcampo, Carrefour and Mercadona.

They have analyzed the online products, taking into account the postal code of central areas of five large cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Bilbao. And, one of his main conclusions is that no product has the same price in the five cities.

In Alcampo, Facua has detected price differences depending on the site where the 30 items included in the study are purchased. In half of the products (15), the price difference between the most expensive and cheapest site is more than 15%. They have detected big differences in specific brands that are sold throughout the country. For example, a 110-gram packet of Navidul Iberian bait ham costs 5.98 euros in Madrid, while in Valencia it sells for 8.35 euros (39.6% more), according to the association. Something similar, although in reverse, happens with the 1.25-liter bottle of Coca Cola, which is sold for 1.24 euros in Valencia and 1.71 in Barcelona (37.9% more expensive).

In Carrefour, the differences are less noticeable. Of the 30 products analyzed, 19 have the same price in the five cities. The rest (11) can be found with two different prices: one for Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, and another for Seville and Bilbao. The biggest price variations – apart from fruit and vegetables – are found in the Milka Shake chocolate milkshake, which costs 1.53 euros in Barcelona and Valencia and 1.73 in Seville (13% more expensive).
