Farasis Energy Secures Major Battery Supply Deal with GAC Aion for European EVs
Chinese battery manufacturer Farasis Energy has secured a significant contract to supply lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to GAC Aion, a subsidiary of GAC Group, for use in its European vehicle models. The deal, exceeding 10 GWh in capacity, will power the Aion V and Aion UT, key models in GAC Aion’s European market strategy.
Expanding Partnership and Technology
This agreement builds upon a long-standing collaboration between Farasis Energy and GAC Aion, extending the use of Farasis’s Super Pouch Solution (SPS) battery technology [1]. The SPS technology integrates large-format pouch cells, system integration, manufacturing processes, and recycling capabilities. It’s designed to be compatible with various battery chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP), ternary (NCM), and potentially sodium-ion, offering flexibility for future vehicle models [1].
SPS Technology: Key Features and Benefits
Farasis’s SPS technology offers several advantages, including:
- High Volume Utilization: A module-free design achieves 85% volume utilization [1].
- Long Range: The system is designed to support a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single charge [1].
- Fast Charging: Capable of adding 600 kilometers of range in approximately eight minutes [1].
- Enhanced Safety: The system has passed stringent thermal runaway tests, including a “ten-needle penetration” trial [1].
- Platform Application: A single cell can be adapted for multiple models on the same chassis, reducing development time and production costs [1].
European Expansion for GAC Aion
The Aion V, a mid-range SUV, is already in production at Magna’s facility in Austria [2]. The Aion UT, a compact electric vehicle, is also expected to be produced in Europe, indirectly confirmed by this battery supply agreement [2]. These models are intended to be GAC Aion’s primary offerings in the European market.
Farasis’s Role in the EV Market
While Farasis Energy is considered a smaller player in China’s power battery manufacturing sector, with a market share around 0.02 percent [2], this deal represents a significant step forward for its SPS battery products in overseas markets. Farasis’s SPS solutions are currently used in vehicles like the Geely Radar RD6 Horizon electric pickup, and in China, the second-generation Aion V and Aion UT [1].
The total order capacity exceeds 10 GWh, enough for over 100,000 electric vehicles equipped with 100-kWh battery packs [1].
