FBI Finds DNA Evidence in Nancy Guthrie Abduction Case

The FBI has announced a significant development in the investigation of the abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie of NBC’s “Today” indicate. Investigators have recovered DNA evidence from a black glove found near Guthrie’s home in Tucson, Arizona, and preliminary results suggest it matches the suspect seen in surveillance footage.

Glove Linked to Suspect in Surveillance Video

The glove was one of approximately sixteen collected by investigators in the area surrounding Guthrie’s residence. But, most of the other gloves belonged to search teams, according to the FBI. The recovered glove is distinct and appears to match those worn by the individual captured on a doorbell camera the morning of her disappearance, January 31st. CBS News reports.

DNA Testing and Database Search

Preliminary DNA testing results were received on Saturday, February 14th, and the FBI is awaiting confirmation on Sunday before entering the “unknown male profile” into CODIS, the FBI’s national DNA database. This process is expected to take approximately 24 hours from the time the bureau receives the DNA information. CBS News

Suspect Description and Ransom Demand

The FBI has described the suspect as a male with an average build, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall. He was seen wearing a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack in the surveillance video. CNN reports.

Authorities are too investigating a ransom note demanding bitcoin that was initially sent to CBS News’ Tucson affiliate, KOLD. The Guthrie family, despite receiving no proof of life, had at one point offered to pay the ransom and has made multiple public pleas for their mother’s safe return.

Ongoing Investigation

As of February 15th, investigators have searched at least two homes in connection with the case. The Associated Press reports. More than 14,000 tips have been received by authorities. CNN
