Federal Court Grants Temporary Stay of Deportation for Humboldt Broncos Crash Driver A Federal Court judge has granted a temporary stay of deportation for Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the truck driver responsible for the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash, halting his scheduled removal from Canada. Sidhu had been set to be deported to India on Monday morning. His legal team appeared in Federal Court on Friday seeking to delay that removal while a separate application is reviewed. The application seeks to restore Sidhu’s permanent resident status on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. His lawyer, Michael Greene, had asked the Canada Border Services Agency to defer deportation by 17 months to allow time for that application to be considered. When the request was denied, the legal team challenged the decision in Federal Court, arguing it was unreasonable. Sidhu pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in connection with the crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 others when his semi-truck collided with a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team near Tisdale, Saskatchewan on April 6, 2018. He was sentenced to eight years in prison and was granted full parole in 2023. Under Canadian immigration law, a criminal conviction carrying a sentence of more than six months makes a permanent resident ineligible to remain in the country, triggering deportation proceedings. The court’s decision means Sidhu can remain in Canada for now while his application for relief on humanitarian and compassionate grounds proceeds. No final determination has been made on that application.
