Rivers State Intensifies Fight Against FGM and Violence Against women

The Rivers State Government is strengthening its commitment to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and all forms of violence against women and girls within the state.
New Programme Launched with UNICEF Support
In a major step forward, the state government, working with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has launched a programme designed to encourage the abandonment of FGM throughout Rivers State. This initiative receives support from both UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA),aiming to build widespread support for ending this harmful practice.
Stakeholder Engagement and Programme Focus
The programme began with a two-day engagement of key stakeholders in Port Harcourt. Participants included representatives from the justice, legislative, and security sectors, alongside traditional rulers, survivors, NGOs, adolescents, and facilitators. This collaborative approach underscores the government’s dedication to a thorough solution.
Initial Focus Areas and Community Facilitators
Rivers State Permanent Secretary, Ministry of social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Professor Justina Jumbo, announced the initial focus will be on four local government areas: Abua/Odual, Ahoda East, Ahoda West, and Emohua. The programme will then expand to cover other LGAs within the state.
The Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, in partnership with UNICEF, has already trained 60 community facilitators. these facilitators will mentor 15 adolescents each, providing them with the knowledge and skills to advocate against FGM and promote its abandonment within their communities.
