Jackie Cahill Steps Down from Politics Ahead of Irish General Election

Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill has announced his decision to step down from national politics ahead of the upcoming Irish general election.

The Fianna Fáil politician informed a group of supporters on Sunday night of his decision, citing personal reasons and health advice. In a statement, Mr. Cahill expressed his regret for the short notice but emphasized that personal circumstances compelled this decision.

“After much consideration, I have decided on personal grounds following health advice not to put my name forward in the upcoming General Election,” he said.

He went on to express his deep gratitude for the support he received over the years, stating, “It has been the honour of my lifetime to serve the people of Tipperary.” Mr. Cahill, a lifelong Fianna Fáil member, also acknowledged the party’s significant role in shaping Ireland’s history and the privilege of representing his constituents in the Dáil Éireann.

“This is obviously a very difficult decision, and one that I have made following discussions with those closest to me,” he said.

Mr. Cahill noted that he did not believe he could adequately commit to the electorate for another five years. He expressed his appreciation to his family, friends, and Fianna Fáil members for their unwavering support, particularly those who nominated him for a third consecutive term.

The selection convention for Tipperary North, which Mr. Cahill was expected to contest, had been postponed multiple times. This leaves Fianna Fáil with only two constituencies yet to finalize their candidates.

Mr. Cahill, 61, first entered the Dáil in the 2016 election and currently serves as the chair of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee. One party member expressed concern about the potential loss of a safe seat for Fianna Fáil in Tipperary North following Mr. Cahill’s departure.
