FIFA Boosts African Club Football Professionalization with Workshops
FIFA is actively working to strengthen club management and long-term sustainability across the African continent through a series of capacity-building workshops. Recent sessions held in Namibia and Eswatini are part of a broader initiative to professionalize football administration and enhance the competitiveness of African clubs.
Workshops in Namibia and Eswatini
From February 9-10 in Namibia and February 12-13 in Eswatini, FIFA conducted workshops bringing together senior club executives from both men’s and women’s top-tier competitions. Representatives from the respective FIFA Member Associations as well participated. FIFA designed these sessions to bolster professional management structures and ensure the long-term viability of African football clubs.
Key Areas of Focus
The workshops covered crucial aspects of modern club administration, including:
- Governance frameworks
- Financial management
- Commercial and marketing development
- Strategic planning
Participants engaged in practical case studies, peer-to-peer learning, and discussions led by experts, focusing on implementing robust organizational structures and improving operational performance.
FIFA’s Commitment to African Football
“These workshops are about equipping club leaders with practical tools that can be applied immediately,” stated Ornella Desirée Bellia, FIFA’s Director of Professional Football Relations & Development. FIFA believes this initiative provides club executives with the resources and knowledge needed to improve governance, operational planning, and business performance – all essential for sustained success.
The FIFA Campus – Essential Courses in Club Management
The initiative falls under the FIFA Campus – Essential Courses in Club Management and the FIFA Leagues and Clubs Professionalisation Programme. This global program aims to professionalize football club management worldwide, combining on-site workshops with continuous digital learning to provide context-specific expertise.
Long-Term Vision for African Football
Gelson Fernandes, FIFA’s Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer and Regional Director – Africa, emphasized the importance of strengthening professional football in Africa. FIFA recognizes that sustainable growth depends on well-governed, professionally managed clubs that serve as pillars for thriving football ecosystems. Through initiatives like the FIFA Campus, FIFA is collaborating with Member Associations and clubs to build long-term institutional capacity, reinforce leadership standards, and enhance operational excellence, ultimately laying the foundation for a more resilient and competitive football environment throughout the continent.
